Ward Shrake got me thinking about what Benjamin Franklin said:

“They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety”

The key word in Franklin’s remark is ESSENTIAL.

Liberty is; safety is not.

The more fundamental value, liberty, is necessitated by man’s nature. Safety is a vague, but tangible value; a state of affairs that one must act to realize. (more…)
