A few months ago, the word on the street was, “Google Ron Paul.”
My advice today is, “Google Money Bomb.”
The Libertarian Party, and parts of the Republican Party, are seeing dollar signs. They just want to say “Money Bomb” and rake in the easy money. The only “money bomb” fundraiser that I found that made any attempt at originality was by Mike Munger – he called his fundraiser a “Money Grenade.” His attempt was still pathetic.
Fundraising is not that easy – nor should it be. Fundraising should be about raising money to achieve well-defined goals. If you are one of the 7,219 hits I got when I googled “Money Bomb” on Google’s blogsearch, I advise you to think twice.
In this busy campaign season, you need to distinguish yourself from the crowd. For Libertarians, if you are running for any office higher than state representative, I assure you now that you are not going to win – and if you are asking people to donate money to your campaign, you’d better have another reason. Otherwise, your money bomb is going to be a dud and you are going to look like a pathetic loser.
I am especially leveling my criticism at Scotty Boman in my home state of Michigan. In 1994, Jon Coon ran for U.S. Senator in Michigan with the goal of bringing attention to the gun issue and the right to keep and bear arms. He made an impact and a difference. In 2000, Michael Corliss ran for U.S. Senator in Michigan, and we targeted the Republican incumbent, Spence Abraham, for defeat, and succeeded (remember this radio ad?). What will Scotty Boman do to distinguish himself like his predecessors? You should have the idea in hand before you ask for the money!
I am not suggesting that anybody not run. I am not suggesting that anybody not try to raise money. I encourage all Libertarians to run. But fundraising is a value proposition – you must offer something of value if you expect people to donate. If you think you are just going to say “Money Bomb” and bring in the easy money, then you are nothing more than a pathetic con-artist.

Greg:
I took a look at Boman’s site. Beyond a vague educational agenda, he really doesn’t seem to have much to offer.
Any positive results he may produce would figure to be obscure and indiscernable. As a stranger, I would have to extend the benefit of doubt and wish him well.
But the fund-raising strategy you describe is very much in line with the historical context of the function of third parties to which I so often refer.
A context which I have to wonder if young Mr. Boman appreciates, or is even aware of.

P.S—For those put off by the violent implications of “bomb”, there’s also a “Money Pinata”

Hi Greg — wanted to hear the radio ad but the link returns an error.

Marc: Sorry about that — cutting and pasting from Word does strange things to some of my links — I usually write my posts in Word before actually posting them. The link is fixed now, so try again. During 1999-2000, the LP of Michigan ran many radio ads. Usually buying $10,000 worth of radio time for each ad. You can hear those ads at: http://www.lpmichigan.org/radio/ (note that lpmichigan.org is an archive site that I maintain — the LP of Michigan has chosen to purge the radio ads from their official site).

Greg, you are one harsh guy!
I needed $3k to run radio ads, because I have been excluded from the debates. But, the League of Women Voters claims that if I poll 5%, they’ll include me.
We got $7k. Not a mountain of cash, but….a well-defined goal, successful completion, and the radio ads will air in the three major media markets in NC twice a morning in drive time for a week.
Greg, I’ve been a Republican all my life. I believed that the Repubs favored small government. I have chaired Duke’s Political Science Department for nearly a decade, I have worked in the Reagan administration, I have testified in the US Senate on Republican causes…. and I have given up. The Repubs do NOT favor small government.
Sure, I’m not going to win. But the Republicans aren’t going to favor small government.
Insanity is continuing to try the same thing, and hoping for different results. And “pathetic” is sitting back criticizing people who actually favor small government, and are working to get the word out.
I hope you had a good Fourth holiday. I sure did! We set a goal, and accomplished it.
